The matter of child molestation is touchy. Just how one defines child molestation differs from year to year and across geographies. In Alabama, DC, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, and in Washington, the age of consent is sixteen. Just ten years ago, some of those states allowed sexual contact between an adult and a child as young as fourteen.
Though Dennis Hastert was in a “position of authority,” at the time he is accused of having committed an act of child molestation, there is nothing to indicate that the sexual relationship between him and whoever his victim might have been, was anything more than consensual. To me, unless the victim had ever indicated feelings of abuse or manipulation, I don’t particularly care about this matter, EXCEPT that Dennis Hastert is one of the FUCKING Republican hypocrites who has opposed other people’s rights to sexual relations that are far less arguable than the relationship in which Hastert was involved. That is where I have a problem.
So, whatever Mr. Hastert and his colleagues have inflicted on others whom they’ve judged, let the same fate fall upon Mr. Hastert, one way or another.
